She has worked under such notable choreographers as Mia Michaels, Milton Myers, Lisa Hopkins, George Faison, Kim Bears- Bailey, and Winifred R. Harris. Some of her students are even pursuing degrees at the notorious Juilliard.
As a choreographer, she has won countless awards including a Choreography Under the Stars finalist cash award, A young choreographers award from NYCDA, and several outstanding choreography awards from various regional and national dance competitions. After touring with Tap Kids as assistant to well known tap choreographer Lisa Hopkins, and serving as resident choreographer for Teen Dance Company of the Bay Area, Cheryl relocated to Los Angeles where she taught for several years at Edge Performing Arts Center and Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio.
Recently Cheryl founded her own professional dance company in Austin, TX. She can also be found teaching master classes, workshops, and residencies all around the country, the most recent of those being with Conquest Dance Intensives. Cheryl’s approach to dance is innovative, pedestrian, and most of all organic. The foundation of her movement comes from the philosophy that we are humans who happen to excel in dance, not dancers who happen to excel in life.
Mission
It is the mission of BHumn Dance Productions, to produce events, workshops, live performance, and outreach that all work together to inspire those who do and do not understand dance. It is to help people find their way and their voice through movement, and to instill a sense of rawness and purity into every person we come in contact with. We are humans who find therapy in dance, rather than dancers acting out life.
Purpose
Cheryl Copeland began this company with the hopes of reaching dancers on a national and international level. She is passionate about growing artistic able, and passionate dancers. She attempts to push dancers outside of their safe zones by challenging them to connect to the reality of their lives and of the world. She places a heavy emphasis on technique, knowing that one must have a strong dance facility in order to reach others through dance on a human level.
